Learn how you can support your local hemp industry

What I learned after the first week of selling hemp

August 28, 2017 was the first day that I actually putting in an effort and selling hemp products.  I was super stoked at the opportunity to team up with TN Homegrown and sell their LEGAL full spectrum Hemp products. ( Learned that the U.S. Government owns the patent for CBD, so I am trying to use this terminology to a minimum. (Article on this subject coming.))

Here are the 3 main take aways from this week.

1.) Facebook marketplace and local groups are great places to start marketing the products you have available to sell.

After the first couple of hours of posting  “Legal CBD products for sale, ” people just started messaging me left and right.  As noobie hemp seller, I was thrilled at the response I was getting from the ad.  It didn’t take too long for me to realize that some people who buy the product no questions asked, others had an abundance of question which I was eager to answer.

2.) People are very interested that they can purchase Hemp products in TN.

In 2 days, over 40 people messaged me about being interested in the TN Homegrown products that I was selling online.  People were very curious about the legality of the product and what it can be used for.  I learned really quickly that I can’t recommend any of the TN home grown products that I am selling as a cure for anything.  As a result, I would find and send articles to people answering their hemp questions. Some of the questions I have gotten is, “Is this product good for kid?” “Is this product good for Diabetes?”

3.) Everyone has their own reason for trying hemp products.

Over the past week, I have learned a lot about why people are interested in dabbling in cannabis products. Everyone seems to have their own medical reason as to why they are interested in hemp products.  It has been fascinating to learn about people’s problems because it allows me to see how awesome the cannabis is for people.

Hemp is amazing plant that can do a ton of good for people. It’s a shame that there is this terrible stigma.  I am glad that industrial hemp is legal in TN. Because I am able to pursue my dream of being an influencer in the industry.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. CBD is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. While THC is the principal psychoactive component of Cannabis and has certain medical uses, CBD stands out because it is both non-psychoactive and displays a broad range of potential medical applications. These properties make it especially attractive as a therapeutic agent.

There are numerous potential benifical factors of CBD. Unfortunately it is illegal on the federal level to test CBD on people for research.  Unless your the University of Mississpi.

The University of Mississippi is the only place where professors and students can research cannabis for the federal government. The stockpile represents the only source of pot allowed for researchers who want to conduct Food and Drug Administration-approved tests on using marijuana for medical purposes.

There are option if you not one of the few associated with the Cannabis program at University of Mississippi. States like Tennessee give universities an opportunity to study the affects of CBD in the medicial setting.

While researchers are conducting test, you can purchase CBD products online. Unlike THC, this cannabinoid is legal in all 50 states. Based on experience, I have found that CBD is great for aching pains and anxiety. The teas are also great for creating a sense of calm.

If you have the opportunity to try a product with CBD, definitely take advantage of the situation.  It’s a great natural healer. CBD offers people the chance to naturally heal their body’s pain without affecting their day.  If your muscles are sore, CBD lotion numbs the pain. If your anxious, then vaping some CBD may be option. If you have trouble sleeping, hemp tea may be your style. It all depends on how you feel most comfortable in taking the plant.

Self Sensoring

Let’s be honest, would your rather by a hemp product or a CBD product? Yes I know both products come from the same plant. But from a marketing perspective your answer matters.

The word Cannabis means different things to different people. To some it might mean getting high to relax to others it’s medicine. The word cannabis to a marketer is a whole other definition. Because the general public doesn’t nessessarily know the difference between CBD and THC. If you are in the cannabis industry or a fan of the plant you will know the difference because it’s part of the culture.

Hemp is making its way into our main stream culture. You can get hemp products in major chain stores like TJ Maxx and there are abundance of places to get it online. But if you asked someone else who doesn’t smoke weed, they may not know what CBD does. That’s what happened to me over the weekend when I sold some TN home grown products at an event for the eclipse.

In order to sell the product to people of all ages, I needed to educate the potential consumers on the benifitical properties of the plant in its different forms. At the time I was selling, lip and body balm, CBD oil, and dried hemp leaves.  CBD is great for you, it all depends on how you want to consume it. Now that I am exposed to different products, I learned I love the skins healing properties of the balm, the CBD oils I great for my road rage and the dried leaves make a very soothing tea. That’s just my opinion. People may have different preferences for how they use the products. The main selling point was that it’s local and legal. That makes people more comfortable with trying the product. Because they aren’t committing crimes.

A lot of companies self sensor. They may just say that it’s a Hemp product and not mention CBD. Other products make a point to say that it contains CBD. It all depends on what wording sells. CBD sells in the cannabis friendly community. Hemp works in the general market because companies like TJ Maxx are selling it.  Some companies won’t say either.

Not everyone knows the difference between Hemp and CBD. As a marketer, it’s important to invoke an emotion to sell a product. Bad news spreads a hell of a lot faster than good buzz. Unfortunately for the cannabis plant, the bad buzz is what made the plant illegal. Now is the time to change public opinion because CBD does so much good without the psychoactive element. It’s not easy to spread the word in a Bible Belt. It is happening that’s to people like me. It’s happening slowly.  California and Colorado are years ahead of Tennessee but that’s okay because it’s a new market that needs your help with spreading the word.

Support hemp

The hemp industry is booming. Currently, there’s an unique mixture of established and newly formed marketplace competing against each other. As a result, more creativity is needed to get funding. The market is currently getting saturated with oils and lotions. It’s getting hard to stand out in the market place.
California and Colorado farmers are years ahead of most states when it comes to establishing a cannabis industry. Simply for the fact, they have been doing it for a longer. It makes it hard for the local TN Hemp farmer to compete with the internet savvy cannabis consumer. Especially since there are now established prices for hemp products. A small business owner may not have the marketing and production budget as a larger company. When you got stores like TJ Mac selling Hemp products, it means the plant is making its way into the general market.

Its hard for a local TN farmer to get to that manufacturing; because the state’s hemp pilot program only started 3 years ago. Initially, hemp farmers were ecstatic to grow the plant with the government’s support. There were 51 farmers licensed to grow Hemp pilot program in 2015.  Once the crop was harvested, the farmers realized there wasn’t an established local Hemp market and there wasn’t a legal way they could utilize their crop to sell products. As a result, the number of licensed hemp farmers decreased in 2016.  The state realized that farmers lacked the ability to utilize their crop for profit. And as of 2016, TN residents can apply for a license for processing hemp. You can apply for a TN hemp processing license in November until April.

In the meantime,it’s time to create and educate consumers on the hemp market place. There are a few local hemp farmers you can support like Tennessee  Homegrown. They are doing their best to educate people on their state tested product. Their products Are worth checking out. Unfortunately, there are only a few places where you can get their products, Unless you order online.  Whether it’s a small or big company, employees and company founders have started to realize that it’s hard to market the CBD ingredient to consumers because of federal laws and consumer’s uneducated opinion on the ingredient.  Not every knows that hemp has a cannabanoid that doesn’t have the psychoactive properties like THC. California company, Q Lotion realized the struggle of marketing the CBD product across state lines, as a result they have created a lotion for pain that has CBD in it but you couldn’t tell by looking at it or smelling it. Which is great because the product does the work of Icy/Hot without the smell. Works brilliantly on my mosquito bites.

The hemp market place is definitely a unique one with the variations of established companies and products. Now it’s up to you the consumer to determine what’s going to thrive or not.

Who do you choose? A small business like TN Homegrown with a limited product selection or an established company like Cannaeo who has established themselves in the industry and produces a a variety of products like hemp BBQ sauce, anti-aging serum, and Bloody Mary mix just to name few.  It all depends on you and me. Yes, There are numerous amount of factors that might influence the decision to purchase a hemp product. They are all worth trying out.

it’s important for you to educate yourself on hemp and the products the plant produces. (This blog can be your resource.)

while you are educating yourself, small businesses need to latch on to the support small business movement to compete with establish companies who are utlizing their budgets. The Hemp market is still new and it’s our time to make our mark.

Is CBD the solution for the Opioid Epidemic?

Science is working on that answer. Over the past two years, U.S. medical community has been studying and publishing reports on the affects of Cannabidiol (CBD), the second most abundant component of cannabis.  The speed of the scientific results, is influencing the pace of the legalization of the marijuana.

In 2015, the National Library of Medicine published a report about cannabidiol as an intervention for addictive behaviors. The results of the study proved that CBD’s anxiolytic properties and minimal adverse side effects support its potential viability as a treatment option for a variety of symptoms associated with drug addiction. However, significant research is still needed as CBD investigations published to date primarily relate to its effects on opioid drugs, and CBD’s efficacy at different phases of the abuse cycle for different classes of addictive substances remain largely understudies. Understandably research takes time.

In 2017, medical researchers found that cannabidiol blocks opioid reward suggests that this compound may be useful in addiction treatment settings. This is great news since the President Trump declared opioid epidemic a National emergency.  Because now cannabis has a future of being federally approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

That’s what the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is waiting for. In their resource guide for 2017,  it states that there have been no deaths from a cannabis overdose. However the naturally made “drug” is still a Schedule I substance, meaning that it has a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision.

Apparently fake weed is okay but the nature made product is illegal and could land you in jail.  Marinol, a synthetic version of THC, the active ingredient found in the marijuana plant, can be prescribed for the control of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of cancer and to stimulate appetite in AIDS patients. Marinol is a Schedule III substance under the Controlled Substances Act. It’s ironic that a plant  is illegal and a schedule I drug while a doctor can prescribe a man made substance  that mimics the natural product.

The DEA was making an effort to acquire their own research on the plant. Last year the justice agency started accepting applications for organizations to grow for sanctioned studies. The agency received 25 applications from interested cultivators, according to DEA spokeswoman Katherine Pfaff. All of those applications are still being processed, she said, with no estimate for when any decisions might be made.  There won’t be any decision made soon.

Earlier this year Attorney General Jeff Sessions said,  “Dosages can be constructed in a way that might be beneficial, I acknowledge that, but if you smoke marijuana, for example, where you have no idea how much THC you’re getting, it’s probably not a good way to administer a medicinal amount. So forgive me if I’m a bit dubious about that.” He does have a point. However effectively blocking the Drug Enforcement Administration from taking action on more than two dozen requests to grow marijuana to use in research is not a proactive solution towards the legalization of cannabis.  Especially since  only the University of Mississippi is approved by the government to grow and conduct research on cannabis. In my opinion, you need multiple organizations conducting studies on weed and compare results. That way to see if results can be replicated.

Mother Nature put things on this earth for a reason. It seems like politicians are government agencies are still figuring out what that reason is for the cannabis plant and how they can make money off it. After all, money makes the world go round.
